Descriptions

Nuku’alofa, Tonga

Off the beaten tracks, and charted waters, the Kingdom of Tonga, one of my top 3 favorite countries so far, ticks along at its own exotic pace: whales roam by the promenade, chickens and pigs have right-of-way, and there’s nothing that can’t wait until tomorrow. You don’t have to seek out a cultural experience in Tonga – it’s all around you!

Oh, did I mention whale-watching? Unlike the Tromsos and
Sidakaryas of the world, here in Tonga, the whales come to you instead. One day when I was marveling the 4-mile littoral blowholes which are spectacles in their own right, I saw three whales swimming by.

There is an island within the Kingdom for each type of traveler, and two day is never enough.

Nadi, Fiji
There is just not much to do in Fiji… other than sipping a bottle of its signature mineral waters?
Apia, Samoa
Serene but well-chiseled, hushed but birthed by volcanic explosions; stunning Samoa is a paradisiacal paradox. Despite its intense natural beauty, this is a humble place, devoid of din and ado, hustle and bustle so characteristic of quotidian beachfronts. The Sheraton didn’t have my room ready at check-in so I waited for 2 hours. I did get complimentary Wifi and fruit platters galore.

Tips & Notes From My Time In The Polynesia

Polynesia is a sub region of Oceania and has 1,000 islands. It’s impossible to see it all and I certainly didn’t see all of Polynesia, but what I did see makes me encourage you to make this your next travel destination.

As for my time in the Polynesia, this is what I recommend and want to share:

While In Nuku’alofa—the capital of Tonga

Staying at Heilala hotel is an absolute must. It’s got a friendly German-Tongan owner, great shuttle service, tasty food free at affordable price, bicycles + snorkeling equipment, guest kitchen with refrigerator available for self-catering and cleaning.

Most importantly, it’s an enclosed ground by the Pacific and is thus quiet, peaceful and safe. Outsiders are never allowed in, not even a pizza delivery guy or a dog.

When in Tonga, call +676 7735055 and ask for Seini for a drive or arranged tour. You will find her very helpful and accommodating.

Another must-do would be the Ancient Tonga Full Cultural Demonstration Tour ($65). Yes! They accept dollars.

Through their informative demonstrations, you will be introduced to their inviting cuisine, age-old medicine, Kava Ceremony, traditional marriage, funeral & church clothing, dancing and so many else.

Nadi, Fiji

If you board a flight to Nadi around 4 PM you will be privileged to see a beautiful sunset while on board the flight.

I found Fiji to be very disappointing though. The beaches are way overrated, the waters not even close to pristine, and loud tourists run amok.

While In Apia Samoa

You can partake in the Apia Township & Surrounding Areas tour, which will take you through the island capital, paying visits to the German Monument where the German flag was raised during Samoa’s time as a colony during WWII as well as the landing site of the first Catholic Missionary to Samoa.

Arguably, the name Samoa has become synonymous with the legendary novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. His former residence which witnessed his most fecund years (professionally) is thus not a site to be missed.

Wifi is a luxury in the part of the world that the Polynesia is in. A day pass would cost you $60. Also, heard Lupe Sina Treesort is quite an experience, one of only 3 arboreal hotels around the world. Reason to be back then!

Side Note: An overnight stay in The Auckland, New Zealand Airport

The Auckland airport is not particularly pleasing. Staying overnight is a nightmare. Sweepers are constantly abuzz like Zambonis. Wifi is a joke, and only lasts for 45 minutes (might be conducive to sleep). The gates only opens at 5am and everyone must fill out a departure card.

The only good from it all is that there is now a non-stop flight from Auckland to Houston, Texas!

Visit Polynesia and you’ll be truly glad you did.
