❈ Yoga retreats can be expensive. It’s nice to turn your life over to someone else to program your days, plan your meals, book your accommodations, and otherwise remove the demands of travel. Sometimes, its worth it to travel that way, particularly when you’re really tired. But there’s a whole lot that can also be gained from a DIY yoga retreat.

❂ When you’re responsible for booking your own accommodations, deciding which sites you want to see, which yoga classes to go to, and what to do with time that isn’t programmed for you, you have the opportunity to deeply connect back to your intuition.

❈ I moonlight as a yoga instructor but by day am working on a doctorate in educational policy. My life is full of deadlines and pressure to work harder and faster and to produce more and more. I can go weeks before I realize that I haven’t done a single thing that I actually WANTED to do. Traveling, especially in a DIY way, helps me stop “shoulding” on myself.

❂ When I’m forced to figure out how I want to spend my whole day without any external requirements or pressures, I reconnect to the deepest part of myself that “just knows.” Reconnecting to that part ourselves IS our yoga. Yoga means union and one way to achieve that union is to connect back to our deepest, most pure essence.

❈ I highly recommend a DIY yoga retreat to Ubud, Bali. The island is full of something called “Bali Magic” that’s all but guaranteed to bring you back to yourself.

How I Got Around The City?

Mode: Rental Motorbike | Taxi
Rating: ★★★★☆

Review

Review: The majority of Ubud is very walkable or accessible by motorbike taxi or car taxis.

Ubud is a relatively safe place to learn how to drive a motorbike and opportunities to learn from rental places abound.

Solo female travelers should be very careful not to allow fellow drivers to convince them to pull over while motorbiking alone.

There is a culture of sexual harassment for women motorbiking alone.

Review: The hot water was spotty and it didn’t have aircon, but the views from the third-floor rooms, the kind staff, central location, and free breakfast more than made up for it.

Review: If you’re looking for a “yoga retreat feel,” the guesthouse at the Yoga Barn is incredible.

There is a small dorm with a few beds available for around $25 USD a night.

There are much cheaper accommodations for single rooms in Ubud, but they won’t be quite the same as staying onsite at an incredible yoga center.

Book in advance if you’d like to stay at the Yoga Barn.
